A Mommy Unsweetened

My heart has been faithful to the holy combination of butter and sugar for oh so long.  It has been true love from the start, and ours will be a relationship that never dies.  NEVA!  But I do think we should start seeing other treats.  Mayhaps more wholesome ones... Treats that aren't so clingy (you know, ones that don't linger so long on the hips and thighs), treats that don't carve out a fast-track in my brain's pleasure headquarters and create HARD CORE addiction, treats that don't spike my blood sugar and take me to the moon only to send me hurtling back with a crash.  Because, it is getting kind of unhealthy - the clinging, the obsession, the manipulation.  I need to take a stand, play the field a little.  Plus it has become way less convenient to eat illicit treats in private out of Soleil's eagle-eye view... and if I won't let her eat them, why should I be eating them every day occasionally?

And before you say maybe I should quit altogether let me just ask - ARE YOU CRAZY?  Butter and sugar oil the gears that make the world spin round... and what are hips good for if you can't give them a little squeeze?

In an effort to gain balance without losing taste in the treat department I have been seeking out new nutritiously un-repulsive treats.  And I found some!

This week's experiments resulted in a yummy snack that feels like the perfect afternoon indulgence.  And it doesn't leave me bloated, feeling guilty or sluggish.  I got it straight from a friend's blog who got it from another blog (search this blog for vanilla cupcakes and you'll find the recipe).  You can follow the links as you see fit.  I have only pictures and praise to add.  I didn't make any of the substitutions my friend did, I made them exactly according to the recipes and they turned out great.

I am especially delighted about the "frosting" because Soleil won't eat carrots for anything, yet she loves this scrumpty "frosting"/spread/dip.  I have put it on rice cakes, in sandwiches and on cupcakes and she loves it!  I might even put it on these.
I admit, this frosting isn't the prettiest, but it is tasty and healthy.  So try it, and tell me what you think!

  2. Yay for gluten free cupcakes! I've been (very very sadly) gluten free since last year and I'm only just discovering that it is possible to make a good gluten free morning glory muffin. If I've got cupcakes too, I'm all set!
